Tipping point explores ideas of fragility, environmental restoration and ecological limits in relationship to coral reef ecosystems.
The project departs from the relationship that exist between coral reefs and coral restoration nursery stations, paying attention to ideas of coral bleaching, and ocean acidification as planetary limits surpassed in 2025. Stemming from the physical condition of ceramics as a fragile material, the project makes use of reactive glazes including fosforescent pigments and glazes that turn white at high temperature, to mirror the biological reaction of corals during bleaching episodes. Departing from ideas inspired in coral reefs and their nursery stations, the project proposes speculative new morphologies, colors and pigments that are reminiscent yet raise questions about coral resilience, future evolutionary pathways, and coral reef restoration units as hybrid marine ecosystems.
Tipping Point continues with my efforts to restore coral reefs from the exhibition space, as carried out in my previous projects (Postnatural Ecosystems – 2021) and Voice of Coral (2023). For any time the work will be commissioned or exhibited, the hosting venue will need to allocate a part of its exhibition budget in order to donate it to coral reef conservation initiatives around the world.
