Beneath the surface

Beneath the Surface is a sound installation recorded with hydrophones, inspired in the morphology and movement of bodies along the Ría Formosa (Faro, Portugal).

Different ecologies of human and nonhuman sounds are produced as water, fish, boats and tides displace materials, sand and debris across the space of the Ria. These soundscapes include the sound of seagrass fields, airplanes heard from underwater, boat engines, shallow water flow, and waves, among others.

To access the work, visitors must navigate a labyrinthine structure of channels built from beach sand recovered through municipal road‑cleaning, where a collection of found and manufactured objects is scattered; including cultural-nature assemblages, stones, driftwood and ceramics I made inspired by seagrass.
